Tu B’Shevat 2018

Dear Kol Haverim Community and Friends,

Our Tu B’Shevat celebration has always been a lively event (maybe because of the 4 cups of wine during the service 😉 ), and is open to all.  We hope you can join us for our Tu B’Shevat participatory seder and dish-to-pass meal once again this year! Come celebrate the holiday of the trees! (*).

Our Tu B’Shevat seder will include wine, juice and various holiday foods.  Please bring a dish-to-pass and your own place settings (so we can reduce the need for disposables).  Also, let us know in advance if you require childcare. The event is free for members and non-members are welcome to make donation.

Please RSVP to rsvp@kolhaverim.net by January 25 so that we may plan accordingly. Also, let us know by January 22 if you require a childcare.

(*) Tu B’Shevat, commonly known as “The Holiday of the Trees” originated in the time shortly after the Jewish people were forced to leave Israel. In that time, it was a celebration of the end of winter and the beginning of spring. After being exiled from Spain during the Inquisition in the 15th century, a group of Jewish mystics, the Kabbalists, reinterpreted the holiday as a time to appreciate the importance of plants and the environment to our well-being. In recent years, Tu B’Shevat has become a day in which we recognize our ethical obligations to care for the planet and all its inhabitants.

Children’s Rosh Hashanah Service 2017

Come enjoy a family-oriented service, nature crafts for all ages, story-telling, traditional holiday foods of apples and honey, honeycake, and more! Blow the shofar to welcome the new year and walk over to the Buttermilk creek for the Tashlich ceremony. After the ceremony, we may hike in the gorge.

This event is free and open to the public
(Note: Since the location is at NY state park, there will be an $8 per vehicle parking fee)

Rosh Hashanah Evening Service and Potluck Reception

Dear Kol Haverim Members and Friends,

Please join us for Rosh Hashanah Evening Service and potluck reception. Humanistic service with live music followed by light refreshments and time for schmoozing! Will Fudeman and David Frumkin (aka Mel and Sol) will once again be providing music.RSVP appreciated to rsvp@kolhaverim.net

For the potluck reception, we ask Kol Haverim members to contribute a dessert or snack. We ask people with last names beginning with letters A-M to please bring a dessert or fruit and those with last names beginning with letters N-Z to please bring a savory snack or finger food. We will provide beverages (and apples, challah, and honey) for everyone to enjoy.

Suggested donation for non-members is $10 per adult or $20 for a family.

Childcare will be available (for children 18 months to 10 years) if requested. To request childcare, please let us know on your RSVP to rsvp@kolhaverim.net by September 15.

As usual, volunteers to help with set-up or clean-up are greatly appreciated. If you have time to come early to help set up chairs or slice apples, or if you can commit to stay afterwards to help with clean-up, please let us know on your RSVP.

Community Passover Seder 2017 with Kol Haverim

Dear Kol Haverim Members and Friends,

Please join us for 2017 Kol Haverim Community Passover Seder. This year’s Seder will feature celebratory music by “Mel & Sol” (our much-beloved Will Fudeman and David Frumkin). There will be a traditional non-Kosher Passover dinner of brisket, vegan Middle-eastern vegetable stew, rice, and vegetarian matzo ball soup (catered by Word of Mouth), as well as plenty of wine, juice, gefilte fish, matzo, charoset and hard boiled eggs. We ask members to bring a side-dish, salad or dessert.

Reservations are required: $38 for non-member adults, $20 for member adults, $10 for children ages 5-13. Children 4 and under are free.

To reserve a place for your family, please send a check to Kol Haverim, Passover Seder, P.O. Box 4972, Ithaca, N.Y. 14852-4972. Also please email (rsvp@kolhaverim.net) as soon as you know so we can get a decent attendance estimate as early as possible. Purim 2017 with Kol Haverim

Come one, come all, come young and old to Kol Haverim’s Purim Spiel and Hamantaschen Contest!

Enjoy the Kol Haverim family production of the Purim Spiel and enter in the Hamantaschen contest! Come in costume, or come as you are. Cheer on Esther and Mordechai and boo the nefarious Haman. Then join us in a parade to the Community Purim Celebration at The Space at Greenstar.

Hamantaschen will be judged in three categories: prettiest, most unique, and best overall. Time to pull out Bubbie’s recipe box or point your browser at your favorite recipe site and show off your baking prowess!

Sukkot 2016

Sunday, Oct 16  / Rober H. Treman Upper Pavilion (map) / 11am-1pm

Dear Kol Haverim members and friends,

Please join us for our annual Sukkot celebration.  We will decorate the sukka and then have a short observance, followed by a picnic lunch.  After lunch, we will adventure for a hike in the gorge. Upper Treman park is about a 15-minute drive from downtown Ithaca, and an idyllic location for an Autumn gathering.

Kol Haverim will provide apples, challah, and cider.  We ask that you bring your own picnic lunch and something to share for dessert.  The event will be held rain or shine.  We will transform the spacious covered porch of the pavilion into our sukka.  There are plenty of tables outside as well as on the porch and inside the pavilion – but no heat, so please dress appropriately.

Please note that there will most likely be a $7 PARKING FEE per vehicle (unless you already have a state park permit).  If you would like to carpool,  the parking lot of Home Depot is a convenient location to meet up.

A note on decorations: Because will be celebrating in a state park, the cutting of living plants is discouraged.  Participants are encouraged to bring something from home to help decorate the sukka.  If each person or family brings a small item of personal significance to hang on one wall of the sukka it would be a nice conversation piece.  And/or you may bring some clippings, paper loop chains, or other decorations.
